The voice of CCNU Move away that “mountain”
narrator: School of History and Culture, Li Rong
On the morning of July 21, I took the high-speed rail to my student Xiaocheng’s home in Yichang, Hubei Province.
I remember the first time I saw Xiao Cheng. I noticed several red scars on his arm, which was shocking. At that point I asked him how did this happen, he smiled and told me that he had manic depressive psychosis. From then on, I kept an eye on the child. After a year of peace, he told me that there were signs of a relapse the other day.
Watching this sunny child burst into tears in front of me, I was distressed. But I also knew that there was no way to make him better relying on me alone. After asking his consent, I decided to visit his home.

Xiao Cheng’s old house
Xiao Cheng’s hometown is in the countryside, which is a beautiful place, and two adobe houses are where they live. His parents seem to be very simple, honest and kind, and I seem to know some reasons in my heart. We sat around and his mother enthusiastically made tea for me. They proudly introduced to me that the child was No.1 in the class when he was young. When he was in primary school, they felt that the local educational resources could not keep up with him, so they sent him to the city. They also told me their worries that their child would not be able to find jobs in the future.
I seemed to understand why the child has been reluctant to ask his parents for help. Guilt and incomprehension are the mountain between them, so my home visit task was clear—I should remove the mountain between them.

The central room
I first introduced the child’s major in detail, especially the postgraduate entrance examination and employment issues that they were concerned about to set their minds at ease. Then I talked with them about the growth of the child, and in the cordial conversation, they gradually accepted my point of view--respecting the child’s own choice. I find that they are actually very open--minded, but they lack communication with their child.
Given that the opportunity has come, I told them about the child’s current situation. They were obviously taken aback, but calmed down quickly. We talked deeply about the child’s illness and made sure they had a right view on it—it’s just a disease. They didn’t have to be panicked, but it’s a real disease, and it needed treatment.

The side room
Before leaving, Xiao Cheng and his family sent me all the way to the station. Xiao Cheng’s eyes were filled with tears. He had been wiping his tears since he just chatted. After I left, he sent me a message: “Thank you, Director Li. You really made it clear and made them different.” During the summer vacation, I kept touch with Xiao Cheng, who told me that he now gets up early every day to exercise, reads books every day, teaches the younger generation to do homework, and lives a very full life. His mother also understood him, and they had no conflict and lived in peace.
Looking at this information and recalling the two adobe houses and the boy with eyes containing tears, all sorts of feelings welled up in my mind.
