On April 23, the 8th "Critical Thinking" lecture was successfully held in the lecture hall of the science hall. Xia Shaolin, an outstanding alumni of our school and director of Grandall Law Firm (Wuhan), gave a lecture on "Feelings, Responsibilities and Career Choices of Law Students". Yang Chen, Secretary of the Party committee of the Law School, and Wen Jie, director of the master of Law Center, attended the lecture. The lecture was presided over by Huang Xiangrui, an undergraduate counselor of Grade 2019.
At the beginning of the lecture, lawyer Xia Shaolin quoted Rousseau's famous saying that "the most important law of all laws is neither engraved on marble, nor on bronze tables, but in the hearts of citizens" as his opening remarks, so as to talk about the pursuit of legal people. He divided the pursuit of legal people into two kinds: great people and ordinary people. Great people's pursuit lies in keeping their name in history and promoting the process of rule of law in society. Ordinary people's pursuit lies in the realization of wealth freedom. He thought that the wealth freedom of ordinary people can be roughly divided into nine levels. The sixth level was the realization of work freedom. At this time, work was no longer a necessary means of livelihood. People had the right to choose what kind of work to do, and can reflect their personal value and ability to create surplus value for the society.
Next, lawyer Xia Shaolin talked about the professional feelings and responsibilities of law students. He used "cultivating one's morality, regulating one's family, governing the country and pacifying the world" to explain that a law student should have the knowledge, ability and good cultural quality, and should have the sense of social responsibility to serve social justice, as well as the professional belief to establish a reasonable, balanced, fair and harmonious social order. Taking Shi Yang, China's proletarian revolutionist and labor lawyer, as an example, he showed the students on the scene the spirit of responsibility, dedication and fearlessness that a legal person should have. As a law student, he should have the responsibility of a legal person like Shi Yang, and be a propagandist, practitioner and promoter of China's construction of the rule of law.
And then, lawyer Xia Shaolin introduced the career choice of law students to the law students. The career choices of law students mainly included judicial organs, civil servants, lawyers, corporate legal affairs and grassroots legal workers. Different professions and industries had their own advantages and disadvantages. Students should make career choices on the premise of fully understanding their own situation, carefully consider the first career from the work content to the development prospect, choose a career suitable for their own development, and deeply cultivate in the field they were engaged in, and develop towards the direction of professionalism and accuracy.
Among them, he focused on the lawyer industry. He believed that the lawyer industry had specific advantages that other industries can't match, such as the lawyer’s relative freedom of personal time, high knowledge and technology content, relatively high income and unlimited possibilities. When they chose to become a lawyer, they should always remembered to improve their professional abilities, keep learning, charge themselves, and speed up the cultivation of their practical ability and problem-solving ability.
At the end of the lecture, lawyer Xia Shaolin said that no matter what kind of legal profession the law students choose to engage in, they should stick to the bottom line of the legal person. The law is ruthless and rigid, but the legal person has a simple feeling, and should keep a kind heart at any time. As the saying goes, "law is gray, and the tree of justice is always green". Every case done by a legal person should embody the restraint and kindness of law, the goodness and tolerance of law, and the ultimate love of legal justice for mankind.
In the question session, several students on the scene asked lawyer Xia Shaolin about the qualities that a lawyer should have and the abilities that a lawyer should cultivate in the undergraduate stage. With his own work experience and insights, lawyer Xia provided practical suggestions for the students on the scene, and pointed out the career direction with development potential and advantages in the future.
Through this lecture, the law students in our school had a great understanding of the future career choice and career development, which provides a certain choice for the future career development direction. At the same time, it also strengthened the legal feelings and legal responsibility that a law student should have.
